I embrace a holistic approach to therapy in which a client’s entire being, feelings and context are taken into consideration for a tailored approach to counseling. I emphasize the here and now as described by Dr. Irvin Yalom as the “in-betweenness—the space between me and you, and what is happening now in this immediate hour.” This approach emphasizes the importance of interpersonal relationships and the idea of therapy as a social microcosm. I also work to create a safe space where confidentiality is assured and the client can be free to experience their own story without judgment as they strive to achieve their life goals, and grow towards a sense of social belonging and connectedness. Finally, I believe we must embrace this present moment in its fullness and let go of the grasp that the past has over us. At the same time we must realize that the future is only a construct or an idea and does not yet exist. According to the teachings of Eckhart Tolle, often we use the idea of the future to create anxiety about what is to come while we carry remnants of a no longer existing past in the form of depression and pain. In this moment, in the present, we are free.
